WotLK Shaman Info Part 1

Oh boy, the moment I've been waiting for since the first WotLK leaks hit the street... the shaman talents, spell, and abilities are out. They hit the streets a few days ago, but I've been too busy to do a complete post. Here is the first list with more to come soon.

The master list is here:
http://wotlkwiki.info/index.php/Shaman

The talent tree is here:
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=h

(note: links updated 7/12/08)

Let's look at this from an enhance perspective, starting from the bottom and working our way up.

Feral Spirit - Summons two spirit wolves under the command of the shaman, lasting 30 seconds. 2 minute cooldown. 51 point talent in Enhancement tree.
This talent and go either way. It could be one of those super awesomely annoying pets in pvp & arenas like the frost mage's elemental, or it could be the half-joke that is the Moonkin's treant. From what I saw on the video it didn't look like the wolves were all that effective, so they might end up being less Water Elemental and more Treant. Regardless, I will be spending points in this to find out.

Weapon Specialization - Axe - Increases the critical strike damage bonus by 25%. Mace - Has a 5% chance to increase your melee haste by 10% for 15 sec. Fist - Attacks from your fist weapons have a 5% chance to reduce the armor of your target by 20% for 6 sec. (Numbers reflect 5/5 points in the talent.) Requires 45 points in Enhancement talents.
For us theorycrafters this talent will be very interesting for us test and calculate. In fact, I can see how this is going to complicate weapon and gear choices. Personally I refuse to use maces as they are the hallmark weapons of no-skill rogues, but the haste increase makes me salivate. I heart haste. I could start into a long-winded breakdown of these stats but I think I'll hold that until we see what the weapon itemization is like in the next expansion. Until then, no matter how you cut it, this is very nice dps boost.

Improved Shamanistic Rage - While under the effect of Shamanistic Rage, you have a 50/100% chance also cause you to be immune to all stun, snare and movement impairing effects. Requires 40 points in Enhancement Talents. Requires 1 point in Shamanistic Rage.
Very cool. I'm assuming this will not clear current effects but will prevent more. It's only 15 seconds of love, but for my 3v3 burst-damage team that'll rock. Drop some wolves, kick in Imp Sham Rage, and go to town unmolested. I expect that I'll be using Sham Rage every time it comes up, not just when I'm being focused. And I don't think I need to mention how incredibly awesome this will be against rogues. No more chain stunning for you, jerk.

Static Shock - You have a 2/4/6% chance to hit your target with a Lightning Shield Orb charge when you do damage, and increases your spell damage by 1/2/3% when you have Lightning Shield active.
I'm not so excited about this one. I see they are trying to make Lightning Shield more useful. But realistically I don't expect to use this talent. As it stands now in PvP I get beat on enough that LS procs quickly, and then I usually put up water shield after that bc I know I'll need the mana late in the fight. In PvE that 6% could mean a proc per minute (very rough guess) which is only an additional 380 Nature Damage at level 80. And as for increasing my spell damage the 3% is negligible. I don't see myself investing points in this unless I wanted to create a purely PvE spec and had 3 extra talent points. But for a 41 point talent this is pretty weak.

That is all for this morning. More to come in this weekend.

You love haste as a shaman? Haste is a enhance shammys worst enemy. It throws off your WF proc which is our main source of dps.. I don't expect to see to many people using their maces with this talent

I'm not sure where you are getting your information about haste being bad for an enhancement shaman, but let me set a few things straight from what I've read and what I've experienced.

First, you state that haste throse off your WF procs. I'm not sure what you mean by this so let's take a look at Windfury. WF is on an internal 3 second cooldown timer. That means after it procs you can not have another proc for at least three seconds. No matter how fast or slow your weapons you must wait for the cooldown before hoping for another WF proc. Furthermore, with both weapons running at the same speed then both your main and your off hand have an equal chance of getting the next WF proc. Again, this is all independent of weapon speed and haste rating because WF will only proc once every 3 seconds--at best. Therefore under these conditions you can get in more white damage in between WF procs. That alone is reason enough to stack haste.

Incidentally, I find that 50-55% of all my damage comes from white damage. I must say that if WF is your main source of DPS then you are doing something wrong as your white damage should be your main source of DPS. I've posted some of my own numbers here: http://www.so-money.net/shaman/2008/06/recent-stats.html

I wonder also if your source of distaste for haste arises from the matter of weapon speeds. Enhance Shamans, like DPS Warriors, want slow weapon speeds as opposed to fast ones for one main reason WF and SS are based on the base damage value of a weapon. Let's compare Vanir's Left Fist of Brutality with Vanir's Left Fist of Savagery. Both have the same DPS value: 103.0, but look at the DAMAGE values (4th line); Brutality has a damage value range180-335 versus the paltry 108-201 of Savagery. That 180-335 represents the BASE DAMAGE value of WF, SS, and white damage for that weapon. Therefore equal DPS with slower weapon speeds will result in higher value damage hits.

Now of course an Enhance Shammy would never take a fast Off Hand wepon for fear of that stealing all of your WF procs, but all things being equal higher damage is higher damage.

Finally, there was once believed to be a "hasted valley" between 1.51 and 1.41 where your off hand was more likely to eat your WF procs, but after extensive modeling this is shown to not be the case. To quote Elitist Jerks: "Haste Rating will directly increase the contribution of white swings to your DPS - 1% Haste will generate 1% more auto attack DPS."

In conclusion, an Enhance Shaman should strive for 1) equal speed weapons in main and off hand to balance WF procs, and 2) highest damage value of weapons in both hands for the high value hits on WF & SS. With Stoneybaby sitting comfortably at 122 Hit Rating I've started stacking Haste and it's helped take my DPS up to the 1200+ levels in Hyjal and BT.

Thanks for the post and I hope this cleared up matters!

    very true, rich:)
anw there will be some tricky theorycrafting about that weapon talent but at first i guess shammies will go for the best accesible ones in terms of speed and dmg, regardless if it's an axe/mace/fist.

i play enhancement, and judging from the video, the wolves aren't that good, unless they are based off your own stats, which would explain why they hit for so little as the caster as far as i could tell was in elemental or restoration gear. the imp. shamanistic rage will clear up a lot of rogue problems and being kited, good news. with the weapon specialization, i wonder if it will effect windfury, as i duel-wield two Wicked Edge of the Planes(97.6 DPS 184-343 dmg 2.70 speed) both with mongoose, and since they are axes, it will get a 25% crit damage increase. now if that affected windfury, it would add atleast another 750 damage, maybe more, as my windfury regularly hits for more then 3k, highest crit was a total of 6k, in PVP this would be killer, as the crit increase would override the resiliance that would reduce the damage, and still have a 5%-10% bonus to the crit damage(on a player with 300-400 resiliance, i have 338ish resil and its 16.92% crit dmg reduction). with Maces the haste would only kill the MH windfury if the two weapons are a different speeds, especially if the offhand is faster then then the Mainhand which would increase the difference between the MH and OH hits within one minute, but if both weps are the same speed, then get as much haste as possible.

Yeah the wolves look like a joke from the video and I can't imagine they'll be gear based as neither the mage's nor the boomkin's summonable pets damage scale with gear.

As for axes crit, off the cuff, my guess is axes will be the way to go if that 25% damage increase makes it through to live. Let's just make a rough guess that all melee crits (white, SS, WF) are say 33% of total damage (no hard numbers in front of me) the axes bonus would provide an additional 8.25% more damage throughout the night (0.33 * 0.25). AND that scales with gearing. DAMN! I might become an Agi/Crit junkie in WotLK.

thanks for the post. i'm anxious to see how it all plays out :D

Also, I'd be interested to know what's working for you with PvP/Arena. I'm struggling with it right now.

    To Anonymous commenter about haste being bad;

Haste for a shaman is fine. I completely agree with rich about his haste view, and also, haste does NOT increase your weapon speed. It increases how many hits you get in a certain time span. So you're still just as likely to windfury proc, but you'll have more hits in between them (which may make it seem less often) because of the internal cooldown time and increased speeds. I don't know if this makes any sense, or if it just rephrasing what rich said, but I thought I'd try to make it clearer. Additional information, although it is about spell haste it is the same idea, can be found here:

Rich, I for one completely agree with your haste reasoning... I've heard a lot of noob shaman say they'll never go haste, but waht people don't understand is that haste doesn't decrease your weapon's BASE dmg-- like you said. all haste does is increase the speed at which both weapons swing, I have been doing hours of theory crafting in game on my shaman, working with haste--without it, and also experimenting with my new "Syphon of the Nathrezim" it's a 2.8 sec mace off Supremus in BT... it's dmg is higher than Vanir's and in most of my experimentation it provides better white dmg dps when equipped in the main hand, whereas in the offhand, (in my crit set) it seems to pass on more WF and stormstrike dmg, relatively not effecting the ratio of procs from main hand or offhand on my windfury cycle to any notable extent.
I was wondering if you have any relative comparisons with any weapon choices, because right now I'm switching weapons constantly in and out trying to see which effects my dps the most...
My avg dps right now on a tank and spank boss, raid buffed in hyjal or bt, ranges from 1500-1700 depending on circumstance. My advice to other enhance shamans is simply this... get your crit first(crit rating is better than agility), stack your strength for over 1600 ap unbuffed, get your shard of contempt.. keep 120 or so hit rating for the base cap to white dmg hit chance (leaves you with about 6% miss ratio on white dmg on avg) practice totem twisting (dropping windfury and then goa immediately after if you're in a rogue / warrior, or tank group--repeat every 8 sec, be smart with shamanistic rage) start each pull with a flame shock, wait to cast your ss untill after your first WF swing then rotate in ES and flame shock every other cast... you should be casting your next flame shock just as the last dot from the previous flame shock wears off if you're able to keep up a full 12 sec shock rotation... and most importnantly.. NEVER USE A DAGGER... or a fast offhand... bottom line... use a green 2.6 speed fist weapon untill you get something better that's slow, to replace it. Sorry for taking up so much space, but I like this thread and wanted to add my piece of collected experience... good luck! -Benz

thanks Benz. looks like i need to do another post on haste and also post some of my earliest theorycrafting i did back when i was at a t4 level and still trying to get a handle on the mechanics.

    hi rich.
    amazing post here.
happened to see it as I was googling for some enhance sham ideas...

currently am a t4-level geared and DW Vanirs. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gorgonnash&n=Centrum

I cant seem to see enuf 1k+ white dmg even in 5mans. and my rotation has always been SS>FlameShock>FrostShock.

anything i should be taking note of??

bert, thanks for the comment!! this post is quite old, i recommend you start with the post on 10/15/08 entitled "3.0.2 Enhancement Shaman specs at level 70" and work your way forward to the current day.

As for your question and armory profile, here are some pointers:

    1) Get hit capped. you're horde so that means you need 177 hit. See my post about easy way to get that +hit. (put +15 on gloves for starters)

    2) the ideal rotation should be MW5_LB, SS, ES, LL. Use MW as soon as you have 5 procs, if you don't have 5 procs yet then SS, if that's on cooldown then use ES, if that's on cooldown then use LL.

    3) don't use Frost Shock. don't use Flame Shock. FrS is good for PvP but not for maxing dmg in PvE. And the current thinking on FS is that it can't crit so its less than ideal. the reason ES beats them all is from the dmg bonus it gets from your SS

    4) replace all your Str gems. Try to hit cap using the glove enchant and Spicy Hot Talbuk, then fill in the gap with +hit, after that you want to use either AP or Crit gems.

    5) keep WF up on both hands at all times. use a mod if necessary--i use simple self rebuff to remind me when WF is about to expire.

    6) MASH BUTTONS!! if you are using MW5_LB, SS, ES, LL then you'll be constantly mashing buttons--it's like whack-a-mole trying to hit what's up off cooldown!

that's all i can think of for now. hope this helps!

Haste rating is not a negative stat. But as everyone is saying, it ONLY increases the damage of your white damage swings, which should be around 40% of your damage, on the other hand, if you take that haste stat, and replace it with some crit, or some agility (AP and Crit) you get damage increases everywhere. your white damage increases, your windfury damage increases, even your shocks and MW5 casts will experience an increase in damage (overall crit rating, and the shaman talent for 30% of AP being added to spell power)
